How to plan a kitchen lighting upgrade that actually works

Step 1: Assess Your Space and Needs. Take stock of your kitchen. What are its dimensions? Where are your main work areas like prep counters, the cooktop, sink, and island? Also, note existing wiring and ceiling height. This helps you understand your starting point and any limitations.

Step 2: Design with Layers. The key to great kitchen lighting is layering. You’ll want ambient lighting (general overhead light, often recessed cans), task lighting (under-cabinet lights, pendants over work zones), and accent lighting (for showcasing features or adding atmosphere). Plan your ambient lights from countertop edges inward to ensure counters are well-lit, not in shadow.

Step 3: Choose the Right Fixtures and Specifications. For each layer, select appropriate fixtures. Consider lumen output (brightness), beam spread, and color temperature (e.g., 2700–3000K for a warm feel, 3000K for task lighting). Look for a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) around 90+ for accurate food color rendering, which is super important in a kitchen!

Step 4: Determine Spacing and Mounting. This is crucial for avoiding shadows and glare. Recessed cans often work best spaced about half your ceiling height apart and roughly two feet off the walls to wash light over cabinets and counters. Under-cabinet lighting should be mounted near the front edge of your cabinets to illuminate the counter, not just the backsplash. Pendants over islands usually hang 30-36 inches above the countertop.

Step 5: Plan for Electrical and Controls. Think about independent control for each lighting layer, ideally with dimmers. This means separate circuits for your ambient, task, and accent lights. Planning this early, especially during a remodel, avoids headaches later on. If you're in the Las Vegas area and this sounds a bit overwhelming, Simply Construction can handle the entire planning and installation process, ensuring everything meets safety standards and your vision.
